The PS5 release of Halloween: The Game has been cancelled in Japan after the game failed to obtain a domestic rating from CERO. The publisher said the decision was made because of the game’s visceral violence and nudity, with changes required for compliance considered too damaging to the experience.
Halloween: The Game will still launch in Japan as scheduled on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, for Xbox Series X and S and PC. The PS5 version, however, will not be released in the Japanese market.
The publisher explained that modifying the game’s content to meet CERO’s requirements would significantly compromise the worldview of the original film and prevent the team from delivering the gameplay experience players expect.
“We have determined that regulating the content to achieve compliance would significantly compromise the worldview of the original film, and would also prevent us from providing the gameplay experience that players expect.”
Players who pre-ordered the PS5 version in Japan are expected to receive refunds through the platform. The publisher directed customers with questions about the refunds to their respective platform.
Xbox And PC Versions Still Releasing In Japan
Despite the PS5 cancellation, Japanese players will still be able to purchase the digital versions of Halloween: The Game on Xbox Series X and S, Steam and the Epic Games Store from September 9.
The issue specifically concerns obtaining a domestic CERO rating for the PlayStation release. CERO is known for its strict approach to certain depictions of violence and sexual content in video games, making its classification requirements an important consideration for publishers releasing games in Japan.
Halloween: The Game is based on John Carpenter’s 1978 horror film and is developed by IllFonic. It is an asymmetrical stealth and survival horror game set in Haddonfield during Halloween night.
The game features both a single-player campaign and a 1v4 multiplayer mode. Players can control Michael Myers as he hunts civilians, while other players can take on the roles of residents attempting to protect people, collect resources and contact the police before Myers completes his killing spree.
The game has also received mature classifications in Western markets because of its violent content. It carries an M rating from the ESRB in the United States and a PEGI 18 rating in the United Kingdom.
