Halo Studios is currently working on a sequel to its 2021 first-person shooter, Halo Infinite, according to a new report.
In his new video, known Halo insider and content creator Rebs Gaming, who stated that he received new details from sources following an earlier report about canceled or reworked Halo projects that were planned before the January, 2023, layoffs at Halo Studios (343 Industries at the time). Based on what he heard, a campaign sequel to Halo Infinite had already entered development in 2022 under the leadership of Joseph Staten. Staten allegedly referred to the project internally as “Campaign Next” several times during a studio-wide Microsoft Teams meeting.
The report also points to a recently discovered Halo Studios job listing for the position of a Narrative Director, which mentions “Halo Next” directly, asking applicants to help “define and deliver the narrative experience for Halo Next” while ensuring it’s in line with the franchise’s long-term direction and canon. The job description also references delivering a “cohesive and memorable campaign experience.”
The sequel was reportedly intended to continue the story threads introduced in Halo Infinite rather than bringing back the Flood immediately. The content creator mentioned that Joseph Staten wanted to expand the Halo universe through newer elements, particularly the Endless, also known as the Xalanyn.
The Endless were introduced in Halo Infinite as an ancient species imprisoned by the Forerunners on Installation 07, also known as Zeta Halo. Unlike most lifeforms in the Halo universe, they were apparently immune to the effects of the Halo Array, making them dangerous in the eyes of the Forerunners. The ending of Halo Infinite teased their eventual return after Atriox activated a Forerunner structure that appeared to release imprisoned members of the species.
The insider noted that plans for the series may have evolved since Staten’s departure. He referenced the recently released novel, Halo: Edge of Dawn, which continues the story after Halo Infinite, suggesting a different direction involving the Flood.
