Haunted Chocolatier Will Focus More on Combat and Adventuring, Says Stardew Valley Creator

Eric Barone has explained how Haunted Chocolatier will differ from Stardew Valley, describing his upcoming game as more of an action RPG with a greater emphasis on combat and adventuring. Speaking in an interview with GQ, the developer said players will focus on finding equipment, becoming stronger, and fighting monsters and bosses.

“But it’s more of an action RPG – the main focus is more about adventuring, finding equipment and getting more powerful. There are monsters, there are boss fights. It’s for the people in Stardew Valley that go into the mines. That’s what I do, honestly,” Barone said.

The comparison offers a clearer idea of what to expect from the developer’s next project. While Stardew Valley centres on farming, building relationships, and developing a rural homestead, Haunted Chocolatier places greater emphasis on exploration and combat.

Barone, who develops games under the name ConcernedApe, became widely known after creating Stardew Valley, which launched in 2016. The farming simulation allows players to manage a neglected farm, grow crops, raise animals, and build relationships with the residents of Pelican Town.

Haunted Chocolatier follows a different premise, tasking players with running a chocolate shop in a supernatural setting. The game retains a pixel-art visual style while incorporating combat and exploration involving monsters and a mystical realm.
