Modded PS5 Now Runs PS2 & PS3 Game Discs

A modded PS5 can now read, decrypt, compile and run games directly off of PS2 and PS3 game discs, according to a new report.

Modder and homebrew developer sword_pdf took to Twitter/X to share that a hacked PS5 can now read, decrypt, compile and run games directly off of PS2 and PS3 game discs, bringing it very close to preserving all 5 generations of PlayStation hardware. Given that it can already run PS4 and PS5 discs, the only one remaining at this point is physical media for the original PSX/PS1.

When another Twitter/X member pointed out that the PS5 disc drives can’t read PS1 discs because they’re CDs, the modder mentioned that any external CD drive will solve the compatibility issue.

The homebrew developer clarified that users will only need to load up a disc for the first time to dump its ISO/image file on their PS5. As a result, games will load just as fast as would installed on the internal storage.

Recent developments in the PS5 homebrew scene allowed hackers to make significant progress toward expanding access to newer console software versions. The Slopkit is a project that is being prepared to support several newer PS5 firmware versions, opening the door to a WebKit-based entry point. These files provide the addresses the software needs to locate functions and other components on different versions of the PS5 system software.

A jailbreak for PS5 firmware 13.60, just two versions behind the latest firmware 14.10, is now available. It uses the “relapse” exploit that was originally posted by modders Nathan Fargo and Sonic-Iso. Consoles running firmware above 12.00 previously had to wait around 50 minutes to load the jailbreak, whereas the new method can reportedly load in just a few seconds. It’s worth noting that the new jailbreak applies to both the base and the PS5 Pro consoles.
