The next title from Kojima Productions, titled OD, will be as “experimental” as one of the developer’s past titles, Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand.
Kojima Productions director Hideo Kojima took to Twitter/X to share that the studio’s next title, OD, will be just as “experimental” as its 2003 action adventure role-playing game, Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand.
Kojima mentioned that he has been acknowledged for creating games that go against the current of the times, such as “hide-and-seek” games where the player sneaks into a building without being detected by the enemy, or “delivery games” where the player enjoys moving around in an open world.
The Kojima Productions director stated that, for him, the most experimental game was “defeating vampires outside your house” using actual sunlight around you, pointing towards the gameplay featured in 2003’s Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand. Back then, Kojima Productions was a part of Konami. He shared that the idea was met with fierce opposition from the development team, and even from people within the company. In that sense, he said that OD is just as different.
For the uninitiated, Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand was released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. The player assumes the role of Django, a vampire hunter armed with the “Gun Del Sol” (Solar Gun), a weapon that shoots bolts of sunlight to tackle enemies. The game incorporates a light sensor on the cartridge, encouraging players to play certain segments in direct sunlight. Hideo Kojima produced and designed the game.
Previously, it was reported that Kojima Productions had filed a series of trademarks that offer hints regarding the gameplay featured in OD. Two of the multiple trademarks filed for OD by Kojima Productions stand out as interesting, as they suggest the involvement of some kind of social element. One of the aforementioned trademarks is titled Social Scream System, while the other is called Social Stealth System.
