Marathon Season 2 Launches June 2 With Night Marsh

by Greg Martin

Bungie has announced that Marathon Season 2 will launch on June 2, bringing a new nighttime version of Dire Marsh, additional progression systems, new weapons, and a week-long Open Play event for PlayStation 5 players.

The studio confirmed that Marathon Open Play Week will run from June 2 through June 9, giving players full access to the game on PS5 without requiring a PlayStation Plus subscription. Any progress made during the event will carry over into Season 2 once the free access period ends.

One of the biggest additions in the update is Night Marsh, a darker reworked version of the Dire Marsh zone. Bungie says the area has been redesigned to create more tension and uncertainty during runs, with many locations plunged into near-total darkness. Environmental lighting has been reduced significantly, forcing players to rely more on awareness, stealth, and equipment to survive encounters.

To help navigate the new conditions, players will gain access to attached shell lights alongside fresh loot options such as Darksight scopes and signal flares. Bungie noted, however, that using light sources could also expose player positions to enemies in the area. The studio also teased new enemy threats and increased UESC activity around the Complex building, hinting at additional mysteries tied to the season’s story.

Season 2 will also introduce a new Runner shell called Sentinel. Designed around defense and area control, Sentinel focuses on slowing enemy advances, gathering information, and setting traps. Bungie says the class is intended for players who prefer shaping engagements before fights fully break out.

Another major addition is the Cradle progression system, which expands customization options for Runner shells. Players will now be able to level up their WEAVEworms using WEAVEworm Energy earned throughout the season. That energy can be invested into upgrade paths that unlock stat boosts and new perks, while still allowing players to reset and redistribute progression at any time.

As expected with a new seasonal rollout, Bungie confirmed that Season 2 will begin with a complete player reset, placing everyone back on equal footing. Alongside the reset, players can collect two new weapons: the KKV SMG for close-range combat and the D54 Battle Pistol, which includes an integrated red dot sight.

The update also includes faster faction progression, expanded Vault storage, contract improvements, and additional quality-of-life changes. Bungie further confirmed that its Bungie Rewards program will be integrated into Marathon starting with Season 2, allowing players to unlock exclusive merchandise and rewards tied to in-game accomplishments.
