Marathon Season 2 NIGHTFALL Starts June 2

Marathon developer Bungie has outlined its plans for the end of Season 1 while confirming that Season 2: NIGHTFALL will officially begin on June 2. Alongside the announcement, the studio revealed several gameplay updates, ranked rewards, and a full breakdown of what players will keep when the seasonal reset arrives.

Before Season 2 launches, Update 1.0.9 will introduce a series of changes designed to make the closing weeks of Season 1 more rewarding. Bungie said locked room keys will now be guaranteed drops from Wardens for the remainder of the season, while map events such as Intercept, Lockdown, Convoy, Anomaly, and Warden spawns will appear in every run. The developer also confirmed an increased UESC presence across Tau Ceti IV, including new Warden encounters, more dropship activity on Perimeter, and additional enemy threats on both Dire Marsh and Perimeter.

Cryo Archive will also become more accessible ahead of the seasonal reset. Starting May 21, the map will be available daily through June 2, and players will receive a free Cryo Archive Sponsored Kit in their mailbox each day during the event period. Bungie is also introducing Cryo Archive: Ranked, a limited-time ranked version of the mode available from May 24 at 10 AM PT until May 28 at 10 AM PT. Entry requirements include Runner Level 25 alongside specific loadout values for both low-stakes and high-stakes matches.

Faction progression gains are also being boosted through the end of the season to help players complete remaining goals before the reset. Update 1.0.9 will additionally include balance adjustments for Rook, with the Signal Mask ability remaining active longer while sprinting and reducing the distance at which AI enemies can detect footsteps.

Bungie also addressed player feedback surrounding Key Templates, which the studio admitted had not been enjoyable to engage with. Fragile Templates will now become Compromised Templates for the rest of the season, allowing players to charge keys using Matter Fixatives rather than risking permanent destruction after being downed. Deluxe keys will also gain additional drop opportunities through wall safes found on maps.

Season 2 will introduce Marathon’s first seasonal reset, wiping progression systems tied to gameplay progression while preserving cosmetics, achievements, and several forms of account progress. Runner levels, ranked levels, faction upgrades, currencies outside of LUX and SILK, inventory items, mailbox contents, and several Codex rewards will reset when NIGHTFALL begins. Cosmetics, unlocked factions, Codex challenge progress, Rewards Pass progression, and premium currencies will remain intact.

The studio also detailed Season 1 ranked rewards, which include exclusive emblems, titles, backgrounds, and weapon styles tied to the highest rank achieved during the season. Players reaching ranks such as Gold I, Platinum I, Diamond I, and Pinnacle I will unlock unique cosmetic rewards, while ranked titles will remain usable for one additional season before requiring players to re-earn them.

Players who reach specific Runner Level milestones before the reset will also receive CyberAcme Sponsored Kits at the start of Season 2. Rewards begin at Runner Level 10 and scale up through Level 75, with all rewards stacking cumulatively.

Bungie confirmed that Season 2: NIGHTFALL will introduce the new Night Marsh zone, additional weapons, a new Runner shell, and a customization system called The Cradle, which allows players to modify Runner shell stats. The update will also include faster faction progression and several quality-of-life improvements based on community feedback. Full details on the new season are expected during the week of May 25.
