Square Enix has shared new details on its restructuring plans, upcoming games, and long-term publishing strategy through its latest financial reports and medium-term business plan. The company is placing a strong focus on larger multiplatform releases, fewer high-budget projects, and improving profitability across its HD games business.
For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, Square Enix reported net sales of ¥297.6 billion, down 8.3% year-over-year, while operating income increased 34.9% to ¥54.7 billion. Its Digital Entertainment division generated ¥172.8 billion in sales and ¥43.3 billion in operating income despite a decline in revenue. The company credited stronger catalog sales, tighter cost controls, and a more selective release schedule for the improved margins.
The reports repeatedly describe a shift “from quantity to quality” as Square Enix restructures its internal development pipeline. The publisher confirmed it has reorganized studios, rebuilt project management systems, reduced reliance on platform exclusivity, and committed fully to multiplatform releases across Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Several recent releases were highlighted as major contributors to profitability, including Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. Other projects mentioned in the report include Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD, Final Fantasy XVI for Xbox Series X|S and Windows, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox, and Windows, Paranormasight, Life is Strange: Reunion, and Killer Inn Early Access.
Final Fantasy continues to be the company’s most important franchise. Square Enix confirmed upcoming releases and support plans for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XIV, Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is currently scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows on June 3, 2026.
The company also reaffirmed ongoing support for Final Fantasy XIV, including the launch of Expansion 8.0 on June 25, 2026, and Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold in January 2027.
Dragon Quest remains another central part of Square Enix’s strategy. The publisher said it plans to maintain more consistent franchise visibility through remakes, expansions, and mobile releases. Projects mentioned in the report include Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest X Online Expansion 8.0, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, and Dragon Quest Champions.
Outside of gaming, Square Enix is continuing to expand its licensing and multimedia business. The company cited strong licensing revenue from the Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy collaboration, while also highlighting anime projects, merchandise, apparel lines, and international media expansion efforts.
Looking ahead, Square Enix forecasts ¥298 billion in sales and ¥49 billion in operating income for FY2027 as it continues its “Square Enix Reboots and Awakens” restructuring initiative.
