The “complex legacy code” of Tekken 8 and studio departures at Bandai Namco Entertainment may reportedly threaten the future of the series.
According to fighting game content creator Moonsault Slayer, the problems facing Tekken extend beyond the game’s controversial updates and monetization. He argued that Bandai Namco’s financial difficulties following the failure of Blue Protocol contributed to aggressive cost-cutting, game cancellations and employee departures. In February, 2024, Bandai Namco Entertainment reported a 96% year-on-year decline in profits from its games business and said it had cancelled five titles while introducing stricter quality controls.
The content creator also pointed to reports alleging major pressure on Bandai Namco employees, alongside a substantial decline in the number of developers listed on the studio’s website. He correlated these developments to the departure of several experienced members of the Tekken team. The may lead to serious consequences, because Tekken is built on decades of accumulated technology and development knowledge. Former Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada has previously described the game’s codebase as exceptionally difficult for newcomers to understand, with “complex legacy code” capable of creating unexpected problems when modified.
This concern becomes more pronounced if experienced employees who understand those systems continue to leave the development team. Harada’s departure and the creation of his new studio have complicated matters, particularly after other experienced Tekken developers reportedly followed him. Replacing veteran staff is reportedly not simply a matter of hiring people capable of making a fighting game, as new developers must learn the highly specialized architecture and gameplay interactions specific to the Tekken series.
The content creator believes Bandai Namco’s recent unusual recruitment efforts may be aimed less at the immediate future of Tekken 8 and more at ensuring that the next installment can be developed. A job listing promoted directly within Tekken 8 seeks candidates interested in developing “the next generation of fighting games like TEKKEN,” such as a potential Tekken 9.
