Metaphor: ReFantazio Switch 2 Port Faces Image Quality and Performance Issues

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Nintendo Switch 2 version suffers from image quality issues and inconsistent frame rates, according to a technical analysis by Digital Foundry. The port offers some visual advantages over other console versions, but problems with image reconstruction and performance affect the overall experience in both docked and handheld modes.

In docked mode, the game appears to run at an internal resolution of 1280 x 720 before upscaling to 2560 x 1440. However, the resulting image has an unusual problem, with horizontal details appearing sharp while vertical edges look jagged and uneven.

Digital Foundry suspects the game uses Nvidia DLSS, but its upscaling implementation may not be configured correctly. The issue is particularly noticeable in screenshots, although the image appears more stable during movement, with less distracting shimmering than the PlayStation 5 version.

The PS5 release runs at approximately 1656p but lacks effective anti-aliasing, causing visible shimmering around character outlines and environmental details. The Switch 2 version also has lower shadow resolution, with some visual settings closer to those found in the PlayStation 4 release.

Frame rate stability is another concern. Digital Foundry recorded performance ranging from approximately 30 FPS to 60 FPS in docked mode, depending on the location. Smaller areas generally run better, while larger environments can cause significant drops. The unlocked frame rate also produces inconsistent results.

The analysis found no apparent support for 120Hz output or variable refresh rate (VRR). Digital Foundry suggests that a 30 FPS or 40 FPS cap could deliver a more consistent experience, while support for 120Hz output and VRR could improve perceived smoothness.

Handheld mode introduces further compromises. The internal resolution drops to approximately 960 x 540, compared with 720p in docked mode, and the image reconstruction issue remains. Visual reductions include shorter draw distances, lower shadow resolution, simpler environmental models at closer distances, and potentially reduced crowd density. Performance remains inconsistent in handheld mode, with visible judder during gameplay.

Digital Foundry’s analysis suggests that improvements to image reconstruction and frame rate stability could address some of the port’s most noticeable technical problems.
