Metro 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027, and 4A Games has revealed the first console gameplay footage captured on PlayStation 5 Pro. The footage showcases the game’s combat and exploration while confirming that both PS5 and PS5 Pro will support ray tracing at 60fps through a dedicated Performance Mode.
The new trailer introduces The Stranger, Metro 2039’s protagonist, as he emerges from the tunnels beneath a thawing post-apocalyptic Moscow. A former Spartan warrior with a dark history, The Stranger is an elite soldier who combines adaptability with a particularly brutal approach to survival.
The Stranger’s Spartan armour identifies him as a potential hero, but 4A Games describes him as something considerably darker. He had previously left the Metro behind and never intended to return, but circumstances have brought him back to the dangerous world beneath and above Moscow.
The gameplay sequence follows The Stranger as he searches for a Novoreich fortress located inside a nearby dam. Reaching it means crossing the hazardous surface, where radiation and the ruins of Moscow present constant threats.
Metro 2039 remains a solo, story driven first person shooter, with the footage highlighting its focus on tense exploration and fast paced combat across densely detailed environments. Players will need to manage radiation exposure and their equipment while deciding how to approach encounters.
The Stranger has several weapons and tools available to him, allowing players to adapt their tactics. The Shatun rifle can be charged for lethal silenced headshots, while Molotovs can be used to clear rooms. The Duplet shotgun provides another option for close range encounters, particularly when navigating areas filled with collapsing masonry.
4A Games is once again using its proprietary 4A Engine to power the game. The studio previously used the technology for Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, which introduced 60fps ray tracing support on PS5.
For Metro 2039, the developer says it has built on the technology developed since then to create what it considers its best looking Metro game yet. PS5 and PS5 Pro players will both be able to experience ray tracing, including at 60fps through the dedicated Performance Mode.
Metro 2039 is now available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store, while pre orders will open later this year. 4A Games says further details about the story, gameplay, technology and PS5 features will be revealed ahead of launch.
