Mighty Doom developer Alpha Dog Games has regained independence from ZeniMax Media amid the ongoing Xbox restructuring.
The LinkedIn profile of Alpha Dog Games founder Shawn Woods has been updated with new details regarding the studio’s ownership, revealing that the Mighty Doom developer is now independently owned once again.
The developer was acquired by ZeniMax Media in October 2019. When Microsoft finalized its 7.5 billion US Dollar acquisition of ZeniMax in March 2021, Alpha Dog Games became part of Xbox Game Studios.
In May, 2024, Alpha Dog Games took to Twitter/X to announce the end of Mighty Doom’s development and the termination of the game’s servers from August 7, 2024, alongside the studio’s closure. Other ZeniMax subsidiaries, including Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks were also shut down. Following its closure, the original founding members of Alpha Dog Games, including Woods, stepped in to reacquire the studio’s assets and brand. Those efforts have now come to fruition.
Mighty Doom was a 2023 roguelite action shooter developed by Alpha Dog Games and published by Bethesda Softworks as a mobile spin-off of the Doom series. Instead of controlling the traditional Doom Slayer, players took the role of the Mini Slayer, a toy-inspired version of the iconic protagonist. Gameplay revolved around progressing through procedurally structured stages, battling waves of enemies, avoiding hazards, and selecting temporary upgrades to strengthen the character throughout each run. Classic monsters from the Doom franchise were reimagined with a playful toy-like appearance, while the series’ signature Glory Kill mechanic returned as a way to recover health during combat.
The game took on a bright, cartoon-inspired visual style that stood in sharp contrast to the darker, more realistic atmosphere of the main Doom titles. It first entered a limited soft launch on Android in 2021. In February, 2023, Bethesda opened pre-registration and unveiled an announcement trailer featuring the Mini Slayer in a stylized animated interpretation of the Doom universe. Mighty Doom launched globally on 21 March 2023.
