The native Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft offers two graphics modes, Performance and Quality, giving players a choice between smoother gameplay and improved visuals. A comparison with the PS5 version shows that Quality mode comes closer to Sony’s console, although the PlayStation version still has the overall visual advantage.
Quality mode improves the render distance, shadows and lighting, making the game look noticeably better than it does in Performance mode. It also combines Vibrant Visuals with sunlight rays and improved lighting effects, giving environments a more cinematic appearance.
Lighting is one of the biggest differences between the two Switch 2 modes. Performance mode reduces lighting quality, while Quality mode comes much closer to the PS5 version. Water reflections also take a hit in Performance mode, with Quality mode offering a substantial improvement.
Performance mode makes further cuts to post-processing and other visual effects. Quality mode retains more of these details, making it closer to the PS5 version in both general presentation and finer visual elements.
The trade-off comes down to frame rate. The Switch 2 version appears to use an unlocked frame rate, with Performance mode getting closer to 60fps but still experiencing drops. Quality mode struggles to reach that target, generally running between 30 and 40fps.
Mojang Studios released the native Switch 2 version of Minecraft on October 27, 2026. The upgrade includes Vibrant Visuals, faster world rendering and increased draw distances. Owners of the original Nintendo Switch version can also access digital upgrade options.
Minecraft was created by Markus “Notch” Persson and first appeared as a public alpha in May 2009, before receiving its full release on November 18, 2011. The game has since become the best-selling video game of all time. Its first Nintendo Switch release arrived on May 11, 2017, before transitioning to the unified Bedrock Edition, which introduced cross-play and shared Marketplace support.
