Several industry sources are pointing toward a 2027 release window for God of War Laufey, although Sony and Santa Monica Studio have yet to officially announce a launch date for the newly revealed PlayStation 5 exclusive.
The latest indication comes from Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier. In response to a social media user who asked whether God of War Laufey was a 2028 release, Schreier replied, “Definitely not.” While the comment does not explicitly confirm a launch year, it has fueled speculation that the game is currently planned for release before 2028.
Schreier had previously suggested that the project was not “years away,” a remark that many interpreted as ruling out a release beyond 2027. If that assessment remains accurate, 2027 would appear to be the most likely launch window based on currently available information.
The comments also align with earlier claims from insider NateTheHate, who reported that Cory Barlog’s new God of War project is scheduled for release in 2027. According to NateTheHate, the game is set within the God of War universe and stars Faye, also known as Laufey, as its lead character. The insider further claimed that gameplay will place a stronger emphasis on action compared to the Norse saga entries and that the title is currently targeting a reveal this year and a release in the first half of 2027, barring any delays.
Another insider, Alir, has similarly claimed that God of War Laufey is planned for launch during the first quarter of 2027. While Alir does not have the same track record as some of the industry’s more established sources, the reported release window matches information previously shared by NateTheHate.
Sony and Santa Monica Studio officially unveiled God of War Laufey during the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play presentation. The game shifts the spotlight away from Kratos and places Faye in the lead role for a mainline entry in the series. Cory Barlog has stated that the game is not a prequel, instead continuing the timeline immediately following Faye’s funeral in 2018’s God of War.
The story follows Faye after she awakens in the Everywhen, a divine afterlife described as the source of magic and a battleground for competing pantheons. Realizing that the plans she carefully put in motion to protect Kratos and Atreus are under threat, she embarks on a journey through the mysterious realm in an effort to preserve her family’s future.
