Sony has released a new PlayStation 5 system software update, version 26.04-13.40.00, which is now rolling out to users in phases worldwide.
The update appears to be a routine maintenance release, with Sony’s official patch notes containing a single change. According to the company, “We’ve improved system software performance and stability.”
PlayStation Support confirmed the rollout on social media, stating, “Starting today, PS5 system software will be updated to version 26.04-13.40.00 in a phased release”
Users who have not yet received the update automatically can also install it manually through Sony’s official system software update tools.
The latest release follows a series of feature-focused PS5 updates over the past year. Recent system software revisions introduced the Welcome Hub, a customizable dashboard area that allows players to arrange widgets displaying information such as storage capacity and controller battery status. Sony has also expanded social features through recent updates, including the ability to join friends’ active game sessions directly from dashboard widgets, communication read receipts, and additional message reaction options.
Unlike those feature-rich releases, version 26.04-13.40.00 is focused solely on backend improvements, continuing Sony’s regular practice of deploying stability and performance updates throughout the PS5’s lifecycle.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 and has since become one of Sony’s most successful gaming platforms. The console has surpassed 93.7 million units shipped worldwide, with Sony describing the current generation as the most successful in PlayStation history in terms of overall revenue.
