Santa Monica Studio has officially unveiled God of War Laufey, the next mainline installment in the God of War franchise, placing Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, in the starring role for the first time. The game is currently available to wishlist on the PlayStation Store and is coming exclusively to PlayStation 5.
The new adventure begins after Faye’s death, as she unexpectedly awakens in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen. According to Santa Monica Studio, the warrior soon discovers that the plans she had set in motion to protect Kratos and Atreus are in danger, forcing her into a journey through an afterlife inhabited by gods and creatures from multiple mythologies.
The Everywhen serves as the central setting for the game and is described as a place where all magic originates and eventually returns. The realm brings together gods and beings from different mythological traditions, creating new threats and conflicts for Faye to overcome. During the reveal, Santa Monica Studio showcased two of the gods players will encounter, Sekhmet and Begtse, both of whom appear hostile toward the newly arrived protagonist.
Santa Monica Studio says God of War Laufey retains the key pillars of the franchise, including brutal combat, exploration, and a strong narrative focus. The development team has built Faye’s gameplay around mobility and aggression, combining elements inspired by both the original Greek-era titles and the more recent Norse saga. The studio describes her combat style as faster and more fluid, allowing players to move seamlessly between aerial and ground-based attacks.
A major part of Faye’s arsenal is a powerful sword entrusted to her by a companion named Rue. The weapon emphasizes speed, control, and maintaining momentum through combat encounters. In addition, Faye’s heritage as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar grants her access to powerful giant magic, including soul-based abilities that can separate enemies’ souls from their bodies and use them as part of extended combat combinations.
The game will also introduce a new cast of companions. Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye, while Jack Quaid voices Phranque, a sentient cosmic cube who accompanies her throughout the journey. Perlina Lau joins the cast as Rue, the guardian of the enchanted sword that becomes central to Faye’s quest. Together, the trio will face a variety of gods, monsters, and original inhabitants of the Everywhen.
Santa Monica Studio’s leadership also discussed the project’s long-term significance for the franchise. An extended interview featuring Head of Creative Cory Barlog and Game Director Ariel Lawrence accompanied the reveal, offering additional insight into the origins of the concept and the studio’s broader creative vision for the series.
While a release date has not yet been announced, Santa Monica Studio confirmed that God of War Laufey is in development for PlayStation 5 and can be wishlisted starting today.
