New Borderlands Spin-off Reportedly In Development At Gearbox

A brand new spin-off in the action role-playing first-person shooter series, Borderlands, is currently in development at Gearbox Software.

According to the Linkedin profile of Randel R., former Studio Technical Director at Gearbox Software, the studio is currently working on a brand new spin-off in the Borderlands series.

The new Borderlands spin-off listed in Randel’s resume is Tiny Tina’s Wonderland 2, which is currently in development using Unreal Engine 4. He had planned and engineered development on the title during his 3 month tenure at the studio. During that period, he also worked on Borderlands 4, Brothers in Arms, WWE2K23, Amazon’s New World, Elder Scroll Online, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland 2 UE4, and Zombie Sim.

For those unfamiliar with the Borderlands spin-off series, the original title, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, is a first-person shooter video game developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K. It’s the sequel to Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, set in the world of a fantasy-themed tabletop role-playing game. The game was released in March 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

The gameplay is similar to its predecessors, featuring first-person shooter mechanics with elements of an action role-playing game. It supports solo play or multiplayer with up to three other players in online or local split-screen mode. The fantasy-themed world includes an overworld where characters traverse locations, encountering random combat and completing quests. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands retains the Borderlands franchise’s standards while introducing some new elements.

Players create custom characters instead of adopting specific vault hunters, each with their own personality. The game offers six character classes with customizable skills, and players can mix and match these abilities. Players can upgrade character stats using “hero points,” and the game introduces melee weapons alongside a diverse arsenal. The procedurally generated loot system from the Borderlands series remains, creating various weapon and gear combinations.
