PS5 Gets QSSR AI Upscaling With Wolverine and Yōtei

Sony has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, a new AI upscaling technology designed to bring some of the image-quality benefits of PSSR to the standard PS5. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to support QSSR, with both receiving patches that add it as an additional graphics option.

QSSR is a new performance-focused tier of Sony’s AI upscaling technology. According to Sony, it uses a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation designed to maximise performance on PS5.

While PSSR remains Sony’s higher-end solution for PS5 Pro, QSSR is intended to improve image detail and stability on the standard PS5. Sony said the technology was developed through Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD.

Insomniac Games said QSSR improves pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine, helping reveal additional detail across the game’s environments. The studio described the technology as bringing some of the PS5 Pro experience to players using the standard PS5.

Sucker Punch Productions similarly said QSSR improves fine detail in characters and environments in Ghost of Yōtei, while providing a level of temporal stability that was previously unavailable on PS5.

Sony plans to make QSSR available broadly to PlayStation developers, with the technology expected to be used in additional games in the future.
