Report Claims Xbox Pulled Halo: Campaign Evolved Trailer From Sony State of Play, Allegedly Frustrating PlayStation

by Salal Awan

Microsoft reportedly planned to showcase Halo: Campaign Evolved during a recent PlayStation State of Play presentation before ultimately deciding against it, a move that allegedly frustrated Sony.

The claim comes from a report by Game Business (via Resetera), which discussed the increasingly competitive relationship between the two platform holders despite Microsoft’s recent multiplatform strategy.

“There’s gossip at Summer Game Fest that Xbox had planned to have a game at PlayStation’s State of Play showcase, but decided against it, which has angered Sony. The console wars of old appear to be returning,” the report stated.

While Game Business did not explicitly name the title involved, The Verge senior editor Tom Warren appeared to confirm that Halo: Campaign Evolved was the game in question.

Responding on social media, Warren wrote, “this ‘captured on PS5 Pro’ Halo trailer sure would have made more sense if it was originally supposed to be part of Sony’s State of Play…”

The comment followed an earlier post in which Warren noted that Xbox had released a new Halo: Campaign Evolved cinematic story trailer and highlighted that the footage was captured on PlayStation 5 Pro hardware.

Neither Microsoft nor Sony has publicly commented on the report, and no official explanation has been given regarding why the trailer was not shown during State of Play if such plans were indeed in place.

The reported disagreement comes at a time when Microsoft is reevaluating parts of its gaming strategy. While Xbox has expanded support for competing platforms in recent years by bringing several first-party games to PlayStation, recent announcements have also signaled a renewed focus on platform exclusivity in certain cases.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is scheduled to launch on July 28, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5. Developed by Halo Studios and built in Unreal Engine 5, the game is a campaign-only remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved. In addition to modernized visuals and gameplay systems, the remake introduces a new three-mission prequel storyline that takes place before the events of the 2001 classic.
