Digital Foundry has compared Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, highlighting significant differences in resolution, image quality and performance between the consoles.
The base PS5 offers 30 FPS Quality and 60 FPS Performance modes. Quality mode uses a native 1440p resolution with TAA to produce a 4K output, while Performance mode drops to 1080p with a 1440p target. The lower-resolution mode produces a softer image with more visible aliasing, but Digital Foundry considers the 60 FPS option worthwhile.
On a 120 Hz display, the PS5’s Quality mode becomes a 40 FPS mode at 1260p, while Performance mode becomes an uncapped 120 FPS option at 1080p. VRR can further improve the experience.
Performance at 60 FPS is generally strong, although demanding scenes can push the PS5 into the 50s and occasionally the high 40s. A particularly heavy fire sequence can cause much larger drops into the high 30s, along with screen tearing. The 30 FPS mode is considerably more stable.
PS5 Pro Delivers The Best Image Quality
The PS5 Pro provides the largest visual upgrade among the PlayStation versions. Its 60 FPS mode operates at 1260p, the 40 FPS mode uses 1440p and the 30 FPS Quality mode reaches native 1800p.
The PS5 Pro also includes an optional PSSR upscaling mode. Digital Foundry found that PSSR produces a sharper and more stable image than TAA, particularly when rendering distant foliage, branches, rocks and fine facial details. It also reduces shimmering and other temporal artefacts during movement.
PSSR comes with a performance cost, however. In one 120 Hz performance test, Digital Foundry measured an average of 76 FPS on the base PS5, compared with 84 FPS on PS5 Pro using TAA and 78 FPS with PSSR enabled.
The 40 FPS mode is less convincing on PS5 Pro, with the base PS5 sometimes performing better in testing. The 30 FPS mode remains the most reliable option on both PlayStation consoles.
Xbox Series X Is The Performance Winner
Xbox Series X is visually very close to the base PS5, with a 1440p to 4K presentation at 30 FPS and a 1080p to 1440p presentation at 60 FPS.
The major difference comes in performance. Despite using essentially the same resolution and visual settings as PS5, Series X consistently performs better, leading Digital Foundry to describe it as the best-performing console in the comparison.
The advantage is particularly noticeable with the unlocked 120 Hz Performance mode. Series X can run more than 20 FPS ahead of PS5 in some situations, with testing in the opening area producing roughly 80 to 100 FPS.
Digital Foundry retested the Series X to rule out potential testing issues and obtained similar results. The reason for the console’s performance advantage was not established.
Xbox Series S Makes Significant Compromises
Xbox Series S is the most heavily compromised version. It does not offer a 60 FPS or 120 FPS mode, instead providing 30 FPS and 40 FPS options when connected to a 120 Hz display.
Both modes use a native 1080p resolution. The console also receives reductions to screen-space reflections, ambient occlusion, shadows, textures, alpha effects and foliage and geometry draw distances.
Digital Foundry recommends the 30 FPS mode because the 40 FPS option struggles more frequently in areas containing crowds and heavy effects. The demanding fire sequence can also push performance into the 20s.
Despite these limitations, Digital Foundry considers the Series S version impressive for the hardware and says it remains an enjoyable way to play the game.
Overall, the PS5 Pro provides the strongest image quality, particularly with PSSR enabled, while Xbox Series X delivers the strongest raw performance. The base PS5 remains a solid option, especially when paired with VRR and a 120 Hz display, while Series S offers a more compromised but still respectable version.
For PS5, PS5 Pro and Series X owners with 120 Hz VRR displays, Digital Foundry recommends the unlocked 120 FPS mode, as the game’s faster combat benefits from the higher refresh rate.
