Square Enix announced several new releases and updates during the latest Nintendo Direct, including Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, a new remake of the classic RPG. The game will launch on February 16, 2027, while Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion is now available on Nintendo Switch 2 and a free demo for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World has also been released.
Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United is being developed by the teams behind Trials of Mana and Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. The remake features upgraded HD visuals, fully voiced event scenes in English and Japanese, and new arrangements of the original soundtrack created under the supervision of composer Kenji Ito.
The RPG retains the series’ Freeform Scenario system, allowing players to shape the progression of the adventure through their decisions. The story takes place in a world affected by the Rise of Morastrum, a catastrophic event that occurs every 300 years and leaves only one person born during that year alive as the Child of Destiny.
More than a decade after the most recent Rise of Morastrum, the Four Sinistrals return with plans to reopen the Abyss Gates and bring destruction to the world. Players can choose from eight heroes and decide which regions to visit, which stories to pursue and when to confront the Four Sinistrals, resulting in different journeys across playthroughs.
Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United will release for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Xbox on PC. Pre-orders are already available across all platforms.
Square Enix also shadow dropped Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion for Nintendo Switch 2. The game serves as a prequel to the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Revelation and follows Zack Fair as he uncovers events that ultimately connect to the wider Final Fantasy VII story.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version includes a full HD overhaul covering character models, menus and environments. It also features English and Japanese voice acting alongside an updated action-combat system with Limit Breaks and Summons.
Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion is available now across Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. Square Enix is offering the game at 30% off for a limited period, with the promotion ending on September 23, 2026.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World also received a free playable demo across major platforms. The demo covers the game’s opening chapter and introduces its characters, combat system, monster synthesis mechanics and exploration features. Players can carry up to eight monsters recruited during the demo into the full game when it releases.
The full game features more than 500 monsters, including both new creatures and returning favorites. The story follows Bianca and Nera as they attempt to restore the Witherwood region, and the game does not require players to have played previous Dragon Quest Monsters titles.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World launches on December 3, 2026, for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and Xbox on PC. Pre-orders are currently available.
Another surprise release is Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-, which is now available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. The game is a remaster of the 1993 Dragon Quest spin-off that was previously released only in Japan.
The game follows Torneko, the merchant from Dragon Quest IV, as he works toward his dream of running the world’s greatest item shop. Players explore constantly changing dungeons, collect treasure and return it to Torneko’s shop while battling monsters along the way.
The HD release adds updated visuals, quality-of-life improvements and a new opening video. The Steam version also features interactive streaming functionality exclusive to that platform.
With Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United scheduled for February 2027 and multiple Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy releases arriving across platforms, Square Enix used the Nintendo Direct to showcase several of its upcoming RPG projects while also delivering a pair of surprise releases.
