Eternal Anima Announced For PS5, Xbox, PC And Switch 2

by Greg Martin

Marvelous has officially unveiled Eternal Anima, a new time-travel RPG revealed during the latest Nintendo Direct. Developed by Marvelous and created by veterans of the genre, the game will launch worldwide on March 4, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.

The project was previously teased in 2023 under the working title PROJECT LIFE is RPG. Eternal Anima is being positioned as a new IP inspired by the JRPGs of the late 1990s and early 2000s, combining that influence with modern visuals and a time-traveling story.

The game follows Wade, a peacekeeper from the kingdom of Urvis Ael where seeking a better future is considered a serious crime. After questioning one of the fundamental beliefs of his society, Wade is forced to flee and begins a journey that stretches across different eras.

Wade will travel through time alongside a group of allies while attempting to prevent catastrophes that threaten civilizations of the past. His journey will also uncover secrets surrounding a lost history, with actions taken in earlier eras having consequences for the present.

Time travel is closely integrated into both the story and gameplay. Players will visit different continents and cultures while meeting characters connected through generations, including ancestors and descendants. Abilities possessed by characters from the past can also be passed down to their descendants, allowing players to strengthen their party through the connections between different eras.

Eternal Anima also introduces a strategic system called Future Sight. Battles use traditional turn-based combat, but players can predict the actions enemies are going to take and use that information to plan their responses.

Once an enemy’s upcoming action has been predicted, players can issue commands designed to alter the expected outcome. This can involve preparing for an incoming attack, delaying an enemy’s move or preventing an action altogether, giving players greater control over the flow of combat.

Wade has another important ability called Psychometry, which allows him to uncover memories connected to objects. These powers can be used to discover information from the past, while also allowing Wade to inherit abilities and Classes associated with heroes from earlier eras.

Players will be able to combine inherited abilities and Classes to create different approaches to combat. This system ties directly into the game’s central theme of connecting characters and their abilities across generations.

Marvelous says Eternal Anima was created by a team of experienced RPG developers, including director Katsuhisa Higuchi, story concept writer Keisuke Makino and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima. The game is designed to combine the aesthetic influence of classic JRPGs with a more modern presentation.

Physical editions of Eternal Anima will be available for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. The standard edition will cost $49.99 on PS5 and $59.99 on Nintendo Switch 2, with the publisher confirming that the game will be fully included on the cartridge for the physical releases.

A Limited Edition will also be available on both platforms. It includes a copy of the game, a two-disc soundtrack, nine character art cards with a display stand and an art book. The package will cost $79.99 on PS5 and $89.99 on Nintendo Switch 2.

Digital edition details will be announced at a later date. Pre-orders for the physical versions will become available through participating retailers and the Marvelous USA online store.

Eternal Anima is scheduled to release globally on March 4, 2027, across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC via Steam.
