Steam Frame Price Expected To Be A Lot Higher Than $1,100

The launch price of Valve Corporation’s upcoming Virtual Reality (VR) headset, the Steam Frame, is expected to be a lot higher than 1,100 US Dollars.

During a recent stream, Valve insider and content creator Tyler McVicker talked about recent news on Valve Corporation’s VR headset as well as the rumored Half-Life game codenamed HLX. During the discussion, he claimed to have heard that the price of the Steam Frame will be “much higher” than he had originally expected.

McVicker’s previous estimate put the Steam Frame’s base model at around 1,100 US Dollars, but he now believes it was too conservative. “It’s too much,” he said when asked about the headset’s pricing, later adding, “My old base unit price guess was 1,100 and… I think it’s much higher.” While he didn’t provide a specific price range,  he highlighted that the device is a lot more expensive than he had expected.

The content creator also speculated that recent increases in Qualcomm chip pricing may have complicated Valve’s launch plans. He claimed the upcoming VR headset’s reservation rollout had originally been planned for late July, 2026, before being delayed, suggesting that higher component costs may have led the company to revisit its pricing strategy.

McVicker also discussed recent evidence pointing to Valve Corporation working on a standalone build of Half-Life: Alyx for the Steam Frame. He clarified  that this project is not the same as the rumored HLX, believed to be the codename for Half-Life 3. He noted that the standalone Half-Life: Alyx initiative appears to have only been in development for a few months and is being handled separately from HLX. According to him, the latter is still actively in development, describing it as a large project with three directors and a team that occupies an entire floor of Valve’s offices. However, he admitted he does not know whether the game will be announced this year, adding that even some Valve employees not working directly on the project have wondered when, or if, it will be released.
