Obsidian Entertainment has outlined a series of updates and major store changes coming to The Outer Worlds, centered around its Spacer’s Choice Edition. The studio confirmed that a new update is rolling out today, with a larger patch planned for later in May that will introduce gameplay improvements and new features.
The initial update is described as a smaller release aimed at testing the game’s update pipeline while addressing a number of existing issues. A more substantial patch is expected to follow, bringing performance optimizations, lighting improvements, and a range of fixes tied to quests and general gameplay systems. Notably, the upcoming update will also add grenades to the original game, marking a new gameplay feature not previously available.
Alongside these updates, significant changes to how the game is sold are set to take effect on May 27. From that date, the base version of The Outer Worlds will be removed from most digital storefronts, with the Spacer’s Choice Edition becoming the primary version available moving forward. Players who already own the original release will retain access, and it will remain in their libraries without any disruption. The change will not apply to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch storefronts.
Players who own at least the base game before May 27 will receive the Spacer’s Choice Edition at no additional cost across supported platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC storefronts such as Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. After the transition, the Spacer’s Choice Edition will be priced at $39.99.
Additional adjustments are also being made for last generation platforms. On Xbox One and PlayStation 4, players will need to own both the base game and its downloadable content in order to access the Spacer’s Choice Edition. The previously available paid upgrade option is being removed, with access granted automatically to those who meet the requirements. Pricing for the base game and its DLC on these platforms will also be updated to $24.99 and $14.99, respectively.
Further details on the current update are available through the game’s official forums, while the larger patch is expected to arrive later this month.
