World of Warcraft: Forever Sets Franchise Records for Peak Concurrent Players and Returning Players

by Ali Haider

Blizzard Entertainment has announced that World of Warcraft: Forever has achieved the biggest launch in the franchise’s history, setting new records for peak concurrent players and returning players. The MMORPG launched worldwide on November 4, 2026, for PC and Mac, and has already surpassed every previous World of Warcraft release in both categories.

The company shared the news through the official Warcraft account on X, confirming that World of Warcraft: Forever recorded the highest peak concurrent player count of any WoW launch. Blizzard also said the game attracted more returning players than any previous release in the series.

Blizzard thanked the community for its support and credited players for helping the game reach both milestones.

World of Warcraft: Forever is Blizzard’s official answer to the long-requested Classic+ concept. Rather than continuing the original game’s expansion timeline, it introduces a permanent, standalone version of Azeroth that builds on the 2004 experience through an alternate continuity.

The game retains the original level 1-60 progression system while expanding the world with new zones, dungeons, and raids. It also introduces additional race and class combinations, including Forsaken Paladins and Dwarf Shamans, alongside an entirely new playable race called the Skyborne Elves.

Unlike traditional World of Warcraft expansions, Forever operates alongside the modern version of the MMORPG and WoW Classic. Players with an active World of Warcraft subscription can access it without purchasing a separate expansion, although optional cosmetic upgrade packs were available at launch.

The franchise has a history of major commercial launches. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos sold 1 million copies during its first month in 2002, while World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King reached 2.8 million sales within its first 24 hours in 2008.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm went on to sell 3.3 million copies on its first day in 2010. A decade later, Shadowlands reached 3.7 million day-one sales in 2020, briefly becoming the fastest-selling PC game of all time.

Blizzard has not disclosed the exact number of concurrent or returning players recorded during the World of Warcraft: Forever launch.
