New details about the Wuchang sequel have been shared in an interview with creator Xia Siyuan and 505 Games, confirming that Bai Wuchang will remain the series’ central protagonist while development continues with members of the original team.
Speaking about the future of the franchise, Xia said Wuchang’s story is far from over and that the sequel will continue to follow her journey.
“We are continuing with this project because, for those of us on this journey, the story of ‘Wuchang’ is not yet over. We hope to unfold new adventures, new journeys and new chapters for Wuchang. In the sequel, Wuchang will continue to develop as the central protagonist, and we hope players will witness Wuchang’s growth, just as our team is growing alongside the players.”
When asked whether the sequel would remain rooted in Chinese culture following 505 Games’ acquisition of the IP, vice president Thomas Rosenthal said preserving the original creative vision remains a priority.
“For us, the acquisition of this IP was based on our recognition of and confidence in its global commercial potential,” Rosenthal said. “He is the original creator of this game and IP; we will respect his judgement regarding the creative direction and grant his team full creative freedom.”
Rosenthal added that the series is expected to remain grounded in Chinese and Eastern culture, although further details will be shared at a later date.
Xia also confirmed that the newly formed studio, Recursive Dolphin, already has an established development pipeline and includes several members who worked on the original game.
“The team has now reached a reasonable size, the overall development pipeline is largely up and running, and we are continuing to expand the team,” he said, adding that the experience gained from the first project has improved the team’s efficiency.
Reflecting on the game’s launch and the online discussion that followed, Xia said the experience had helped the studio mature.
“As the team’s first game, it’s a great stroke of luck that players have taken such a liking to it. Having gone through these experiences and learnt from them, the team has matured considerably. Being able to grow alongside our players is, in itself, a great blessing for us.”
Rosenthal also pointed to the game’s commercial performance as a key reason for investing further in the franchise.
“These figures are one of the key reasons we invested in this IP and continue to invest in its sequels,” he said. “We are extremely satisfied with the scale of the player base this game has reached.”
While the sequel remains in the early stages of development, Xia said the team already has extensive plans for Wuchang’s future and will share more information when the time is right.
