Xbox has announced Xbox Labs, a new team tasked with exploring emerging technologies and finding new ways to make games more accessible to players and developers. The initiative will bring together game makers, engineers, and scientists to experiment with new ideas and turn them into experiences for the gaming community.
According to an internal message sent to Xbox employees globally, the team will operate under Scott and focus on experimenting with new approaches to game development, distribution, and player interaction. Xbox Labs plans to build in the open, learn from how people use its projects, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating games.
The announcement highlighted recent experiments that challenge traditional boundaries between gaming software and hardware. These include adapting Windows PC games to run on Apple Silicon, bringing games to browsers through WebAssembly and WebGPU, and incorporating existing games into the source code of other titles.
Xbox believes these developments could create new opportunities to expand access to games, give older titles a new lease on life, and allow more people to participate in game creation. The company acknowledged that these possibilities could challenge established business models, but described the potential benefits for players as a reason to investigate them further.
The initiative will also examine how emerging technologies, including AI agents, could influence game development. Xbox noted that coding has become a major workload for AI agents because software can be written, executed, and tested. Games share many of these characteristics, presenting an opportunity for the company to apply its 25 years of experience in game development to new technological approaches.
Xbox also plans to share the tools developed through Xbox Labs with developers across the industry as the team learns from its experiments.
Despite the new initiative, the company stressed that its existing priorities will remain unchanged. Xbox Labs will operate alongside its ongoing commitments to the 4Cs, developing games, supporting its hardware business, and responsibly managing its intellectual property and gaming communities.
Xbox Labs represents an effort to explore how emerging technologies could change the ways games are made, accessed, and experienced without abandoning the company’s current development priorities.
