Xbox Testing Smart Download Client to Boost Install Speeds

by Ali Haider

Microsoft is introducing a new Xbox smart download client designed to improve game download and update speeds. The feature works by automatically testing available content servers shortly after a download begins, allowing the system to connect to the fastest option available.

According to the Xbox Support page, the client checks which content servers can be used for a game install or update before measuring the connection speed to each server pool. It then selects the fastest available connection for that specific download.

The Xbox smart download client will also repeat these speed tests periodically while an install or update is in progress. If a faster server becomes available, the system can continue using the quickest connection throughout the download process.

The feature will be added to the Xbox Series X/S system software, which is built on a modified Windows NT and Hyper-V architecture. The operating system launched alongside the consoles on November 10, 2020, and has received regular updates over the years, including additions such as 4K dashboard resolution, dynamic animated backgrounds, integrated Discord voice chat, streamlined power-saving modes, improvements to Quick Resume, and expanded accessibility features.
