Microsoft has begun testing an ad-supported game streaming option for Xbox Insiders, giving participants a new way to stream select games they own at no additional cost.
The early test is available in supported regions and allows Xbox Insiders with an Xbox account to stream eligible titles from their library for free. During the trial, streaming sessions are limited to 1 hour and can be accessed across supported devices.
As part of the experience, advertisements are shown before each streaming session begins. Microsoft said the core gameplay remains unchanged once players enter a game, and the feature is entirely optional, with other ways to access and play games remaining available.
According to Xbox, the initiative is intended to make game streaming more accessible, particularly for players using existing devices or older hardware. The company noted that cloud streaming can also help Xbox One owners play newer Xbox Series X|S titles without immediately upgrading to new hardware, while offering another option in regions where consoles are less accessible or more expensive.
Microsoft said advertising has long been part of the gaming industry through methods such as in-game placements and free-to-play experiences. With this new test, the company aims to explore whether advertising can help reduce the cost of access while allowing more players to stream games they already own.
Xbox also outlined several principles that will guide the trial. The company said advertisements should provide value to players, never interrupt gameplay, meet the same quality standards as Xbox content, be clearly identified as advertising and match player expectations across different platforms.
Microsoft said feedback from Xbox Insiders will help shape the future of the feature as it evaluates new ways to make game streaming more affordable and accessible.
