20th Century Studios has pushed back against rumours that the planned Alien: Romulus sequel has been shelved, with studio president Steve Asbell confirming the project remains in development.
Speculation spread online after reports claimed the sequel had been cancelled because of alleged creative disagreements between director Fede Álvarez and producer Ridley Scott. The rumours suggested the dispute centred on Álvarez’s reported interest in bringing back Michael Fassbender’s synthetic character, David.
Asbell publicly dismissed those claims, stating that the Alien: Romulus sequel has not been shelved.
While the next film remains in development, the studio has not announced when production will begin or confirmed who will direct the project.
Released in 2024, Alien: Romulus was directed by Fede Álvarez and takes place between the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. The film follows Rain and her synthetic companion Andy as a scavenging mission aboard an abandoned space station turns into a fight for survival against Xenomorphs and facehuggers.
The film was both a critical and commercial success, earning more than $350 million at the global box office and marking a return to the franchise’s sci-fi horror roots.
