Epic Games recently held a live stream featuring Unreal Engine 5 developers and held a Q/A session where they talked about the PS5 SSD Tech.
In their Q/A session, Epic Games devs were asked about the PS5 SSD Tech and whether it will benefit from the improvements featured in the upcoming Unreal Engine 5. The question was related to the performance and benefits of the solid-state drive featured in the PS5.
One of the devs replied that it “certainly helps” when used in Unreal Engine 5. This is not just related to loading and streaming assets but it also helps with texture streaming. The higher I/O bandwidth would allow developers to stream all data simultaneously without assets popping in the games. So the main takeaway here is that the SSD tech is not just limited to improving the load times but also helps with loading higher-quality assets in and out of memory.
While the devs praised the SSD, they also talked about how well their technology can scale to classic HDDs by mentioning the new UE5 demo can run surprisingly well on them.
If you are interested in the full session, you can watch it on YouTube. There is a lot of technical jargon and interesting tidbits shared on the new Unreal Engine. You can also have a look at the Temporal Super Resolution which is one of the features of the upcoming UE5 and supports PS5 and XSX. This allows the developers to save valuable resources by rendering the game at a lower resolution with the same quality level as running on native 4K. This is essentially AMD’s answer to the DLSS offered by Nvidia.
