Microsoft has confirmed the next set of games for the Xbox Series that will get an FPS boost. These are the majority of Bethesda games including Prey.
FPS Boost is a new concept that was developed and supported by Microsoft for Xbox Series consoles. It essentially allows them to tweak the frame rate of a game that runs in backward compatibility mode so that it can run at double the original performance. If a game runs at 30 FPS, it can be doubled to 60, and 60 to 120, and so on.
The first batch of games that received FPS Boost included Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs 2, Sniper Elite 4, and Super Lucky’s Tale. They are now being followed by more games, but for now, the confirmed list included the majority of the games that were published by Bethesda.
This was revealed in a podcast by Larry Hryb a.k.a Major Nelson, at the 14:44 mark where Larry Hryb was talking to Jeff Rubenstein. It was revealed that the following five games will benefit from the backward compatibility program and FPS Boost on the Xbox Series consoles.
- Dishonored Definitive Edition
- Prey
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Fallout 4
- Fallout 76
Fallout 4 was the first game to get the FPS Boost treatment but it was only shown as a proof of concept. This might finally arrive for the Xbox Series consoles along with four additional games, one of which is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. While there is no release date or window given for this upcoming batch, theoretically this shouldn’t take that long.
It is technically possible right now to run Skyrim at 60 FPS on the Xbox Series consoles, but that requires a user mod to be installed. The new FPS Boost should remove the modding restrictions and allow anyone to simply toggle it in the game.
