Funcom has released a new developer deep dive for Dune: Awakening, offering a closer look at what players can expect when the open world survival game arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on September 22. Alongside the new video, the studio has also confirmed that the PlayStation 5 version will receive a physical retail release.
The physical edition will launch on the same day as the digital console versions. Funcom is partnering with Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe to distribute the game across Europe, Australia and New Zealand, while Solutions 2 GO Inc. will handle retail distribution in North and South America. A Japanese retail release is also planned for October, with the local publishing partner set to be announced at a later date.
According to Funcom CEO Rui Casais, the console launch marks a significant milestone for the studio, with more than a year of updates and improvements made to the PC version now being included across all platforms from day one. He said the September release represents the most complete version of Dune: Awakening to date and highlighted the importance of working with retail partners to bring the game to more players worldwide.
Digital pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox versions have been available since June 2, while physical PlayStation 5 pre-orders are now open through selected retailers, including Amazon, GameStop and EB Games.
Players purchasing the physical PlayStation 5 edition for a limited time will receive the exclusive Terrarium of Muad’Dib decorative item for their base, along with a global colour swatch. Digital pre-orders of any edition also include these bonuses, while Deluxe and Ultimate Edition buyers will receive a 5-day early access period. Those higher-tier editions also come with additional downloadable content, armour sets and building pieces.
The newly released deep dive outlines several features arriving with the September update. The console versions will offer the same core experience as PC, with a user interface and controls adapted for consoles and a target of 60fps on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X when using Performance Mode.
One of the biggest additions is full single-player support. The entire game can now be completed alone, with players able to adjust difficulty and customise a range of gameplay settings, including harvesting rates, experience gain and combat challenge. These options will also be available on private servers.
The September release also completes the game’s first major story arc, bringing Book One to its conclusion with a cinematic finale that can be experienced from beginning to end.
Console players, as well as newcomers on PC, will also gain access to every major update introduced since the game’s original PC release. These additions include optional PvP, expanded endgame activities, new locations and missions, plus a wide range of quality-of-life improvements.
Originally released on PC, Dune: Awakening blends open world survival gameplay with exploration, crafting, combat and base building, while also incorporating RPG systems, a cinematic narrative and multiple ways to play, including single-player, private servers and large-scale online multiplayer. The console launch is scheduled for September 22 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
