The female protagonist seen in the marketing for Xbox Game Studios and Playground Games’ upcoming action role-playing game, Fable, has been redesigned ahead of Gamescom 2026.
The main character, previously featured prominently in marketing, drew attention because of some fans finding her distinct facial appearance and overall design to be the outcome of politically curated “diversity.” New footage shared by the official Fable Twitter/X account shows a noticeably different version of the female protagonist, with a more conventionally attractive and polished appearance. The change come as a bit of a surprise because the upcoming action role-playing game features a robust character customization that will allow players to alter the character’s appearance as per their liking.
The redesign has become a talking point because the earlier version had already become closely associated with the game’s marketing. Some players had criticized the original design, arguing that the protagonist did not represent the stylized, larger-than-life fantasy aesthetic they expected from a new Fable game. The newer appearance has consequently been received by some sections of the gaming community as a welcome adjustment.
Fable has faced ongoing scrutiny since its initial reveal, with criticism extending to its visual direction, humor, world design and overall presentation. The protagonist’s appearance became a symbol of concern about the game’s overall artistic direction.
The game’s presence at the upcoming Gamescom 2026 is likely viewed as a way for Playground Games to alter expectations. A stronger presentation of the protagonist may shift fan perception, but changing a character model does not necessarily address concerns about the game itself. Fable’s reception will ultimately depend on its gameplay, writing, world-building and ability to capture the whimsical fantasy identity associated with the franchise.
Fable is set for release on February 23, 2027, across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S. It is set in a new interpretation of the fictional kingdom of Albion.
