Report Claims Fable Has Run Well Beyond Budget

by Ali Haider

A new report claims Playground Games’ upcoming Fable reboot has exceeded its planned development budget by a significant margin.

The claim comes from Windows Central, which said the project has run “uncomfortably” beyond budget. The report did not provide additional details on the scale of the reported overspend or explain what led to the increased costs.

The comment appeared in an article discussing Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy. While the report noted that Halo Campaign Evolved launched on PlayStation 5 and suggested its sequels may not, it added that “the same cannot be said” for Fable.

The Fable reboot is currently scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC and PlayStation 5, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. Originally announced during the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020, the action RPG has undergone an extended development cycle, with its release shifting from an earlier target to early 2027.

As with any unconfirmed report regarding development budgets, the information should be treated as a claim until Microsoft or Playground Games provides an official statement.
