Fable will feature around 15 to 20 hours of main quest content, Xbox has confirmed during a group Q&A attended by Polygon at Gamescom 2026. The developers also revealed that players can spend another 15 to 20 hours on side content and open world exploration.
Associate game director Will Kennedy explained that the mainline quests represent only part of the experience, with Fable also offering a range of optional activities and systems designed to keep players engaged beyond the central story.
“We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay,” Kennedy told Polygon. “And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.”
The comments suggest that players focusing primarily on the main story can expect a relatively contained RPG experience, while those exploring the world and completing optional content can substantially increase their total playtime.
Fable Is Not Intended To Be A Huge Game
Following Kennedy’s answer, someone else in the group Q&A described Fable as “not a huge game”. Playground Games associate game director Craig Littler subsequently expanded on Kennedy’s comments, pointing towards the game’s open-ended life systems.
“As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that’s what you want to do,” Littler reiterated.
These life systems are expected to complement the main quests and open-world activities, giving players additional ways to spend time in the world without requiring them to progress through the central story.
Fable is being developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios. The open-world action RPG is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.
The game will also launch day one on Xbox Game Pass.
