Fallout 3 Remake Footage Has Apparently Been Shown Behind Closed Doors

Footage from the unannounced remake of Bethesda Game Studios’ 2008 action role-playing game, Fallout 3, has apparently been shown behind closed doors.

During the latest episode of the Jeff Gerstmann Show, host Jeff Gerstmann talked about Bethesda Softworks’ future following recent developments surrounding the studio. While speculating that the company is likely to prioritize The Elder Scrolls VI before shifting its full attention to the next mainline Fallout, he brought up the previously rumored Fallout 3 remake, once again confirming its existence.

“Someone else has put in quite a lot of work into a remake that has yet to officially materialize,” Gerstmann said. He added that he is no longer certain of the project’s status, explaining, “I don’t even know if that game is—I assume that that is still happening, but maybe it is dead. Who can say?” He further stated, “I have seen footage of a Fallout 3 remake, so someone somewhere made something.” Although he did not elaborate on what he saw, when he saw it, or who developed it, his statement suggests that the project has progressed far enough for playable or presentation footage to be shown behind closed doors.

Leaks regarding a remake have been circulating for years. Internal Microsoft documents that surfaced during the company’s legal battle with the FTC referenced a remaster as part of Bethesda’s long-term roadmap. More recently in March, a product listing from McFarlane Toys for a figure was described as “ELITE EDITION 7IN – FALLOUT 3 REMASTERED – #13 T-45B NUKA COLA.” During the same month, Gerstmann had suggested that the Fallout 3 remake may be handled by an external developer rather than Bethesda Game Studios. “[Bethesda] will probably not do the remakes,” he stated. “I think those have been outsourced to other [studios]; like the Fallout 3 thing I think has been outsourced to an external studio.”

Later in May, 2026, during an episode of The Xbox Two podcast, Xbox insider and co-host Jez Corden mentioned that he expects at lease one of the Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remakes to be released in 2027. “Maybe 2027 for a Fallout remake, at least one of them,” he said.
