Obsidian Entertainment Was Reportedly Working On A Shadowrun Game Led By Fallout: New Vegas Lead Writer

Obsidian Entertainment was working on a Shadowrun game led by Fallout: New Vegas lead writer John Gonzalez.

Chris Avellone, co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment, took to Twitter/X to share that the studio’s employees appear to have been told that all of its projects were “re-evaluated” today. Based on what he’s heard, Grounded 2 is still operational, though he suggested that this is likely due to the game being mostly out-sourced to Eidos Montreal.

As for The Outer Worlds 2 expansions, Avellone mentioned that they are still planned, with the first one set for release in September, 2026. As for Avowed 2, despite reports claiming otherwise, he said that the game is still being worked on in the hopes of being “re-pitched.”

It seems Grounded is still going (mostly out-sourced in Eidos Montreal anyway, so no surprise), Outer Worlds 2 expansions still planned for now (1st one is Sept), and uh, despite reports, Avowed 2 is STILL being worked on (for now) in the hopes of being “re-pitched” (whatever that means),” said Avellone.

Furthermore, Avellone mentioned that all other projects at Obsidian Entertainment, including a Shadowrun game led by Fallout: New Vegas lead writer John Gonzalez, were put on pause. “All other projects at the studio, including the rumored Shadowrun game John Gonzalez was on, were put on pause,” he stated.

Contrary to Avellone’s information, a recent Bloomberg report claimed that the sequel to Avowed was canceled as part of restructuring at Xbox. It was also said that developer Obsidian Entertainment is shifting its focus towards a new Fallout game led by studio design director Josh Sawyer. The latter had previously been directing a role-playing game that reportedly shared structural and thematic similarities with Fallout but was not part of the franchise. The report contradicts earlier comments made earlier by Avellone, who stated that the Avowed sequel was too far into development to have been canceled.
