Prime Video’s God of War series is set to move forward with a new lead actor after Ryan Hurst was forced to leave the role of Kratos following an injury sustained during production. The God of War Kratos recast was confirmed by Deadline, which reported that Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios made the decision after reviewing the show’s production schedule.

According to Deadline, Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt on the PlayStation adaptation in late June. TMZ was first to report the injury. Hurst has since undergone surgery and is recovering, while production on the series was paused immediately after the incident and remains on hiatus.

Deadline reported, “This is a shocker: Prime Video‘s God Of War will have a new actor playing Kratos as the lead role in the high profile fantasy drama series is being recast, Deadline has learned.”

The publication added, “The decision, made after a careful consideration by the studios on the show, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, comes after Ryan Hurst, who had been originally cast as Kratos, was seriously injured on the set of the PlayStation video game adaptation in late June.”

According to sources cited by Deadline, four episodes had already been completed before the incident, while parts of additional episodes had also been filmed. Those scenes will now be reshot with the actor taking over the role of Kratos.

The report states that Hurst’s recovery remains the priority, but the expected rehabilitation period was longer than the production schedule could accommodate. Deadline noted that preparation for the series is expected to begin in mid-August, with filming currently scheduled to resume in mid-October. The God of War Kratos recast means production can continue while Hurst focuses on his recovery.
