The release of Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio’s upcoming action-adventure game, God of War Laufey, may happen during the February-March 2027 period.
During his new video, Bloomberg investigative journalist Jason Schreier explained how GTA VI’s upcoming launch is altering release calendars for major publishers. With pre-orders opening tomorrow and Take-Two Interactive being confident in the November 19 date, game companies are increasingly targeting release windows either before GTA VI arrives or several months afterward. One such game is God of War Laufey.
Schreier noted that many high-profile titles are clustering around September 2026, while others are expected to move into the first quarter of 2027. He believes February and March will become especially crowded as publishers seek to avoid competing directly with Rockstar’s juggernaut while still remaining within their fiscal years. He brought up God of War Laufey, saying that it may be announced soon for a February or March 2027 release. “I wouldn’t be surprised if that gets announced for February or March pretty soon,” he stated. Recently, insider Nate the Hate mentioned that the upcoming God of War spin-off could potentially be in first half 2027.
According to the investigative journalist, publishers have several reasons for steering clear of GTA VI. Beyond dominating social media discussions, the game is expected to control storefront visibility on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store. Retail promotions will likely be focused on Rockstar’s title as well, making it difficult for competing releases to gain attention.
Schreier cited market research indicating that a large percentage of players purchase only a handful of games each year. With GTA VI expected to cost 80 US Dollars for its standard edition, many consumers may reserve a significant portion of their gaming budget for Rockstar’s release, leaving less room for other AAA games. He expects more publishers to reveal February or March 2027 launch plans in the coming months.
