Halo Studios Reportedly Considered Expansive Halo 2 and Halo 3 Remakes Before Layoffs

Halo Studios reportedly explored ambitious remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3 that would have included multiplayer, Forge, Firefight, Theater, and new bonus missions. According to Rebs Gaming, the studio surveyed community members about potential features before layoffs derailed the reported projects.

The reported plans went beyond recreating the original campaigns, with Halo Studios considering ways to bring back the multiplayer features that helped define both games. The surveys also explored which classic mechanics and content players would want to see in the remakes.

For Halo 2, the studio reportedly asked about the importance of dual wielding, the potential addition of Firefight, and whether to reuse the cinematic cutscenes produced by Blur Studio for Halo 2: Anniversary.

According to a source cited by Rebs Gaming, responses to reusing the existing cutscenes were negative. The source reportedly pointed to differences between the Covenant designs being developed for Halo: Campaign Evolved and those featured in the Halo 2: Anniversary cinematics. Reusing the scenes could also have raised concerns about the studio relying too heavily on existing assets.

The reported feedback also highlighted the importance of dual wielding and a multiplayer mode that preserved the original gameplay while catering to casual and competitive players. Respondents reportedly wanted a full selection of playlists available at launch.

Halo 3 was reportedly being considered for an equally extensive remake, with surveys covering multiplayer, Forge, Theater, Firefight, and additional modes. One source described the project as a potential flagship release that would receive more resources than the other remakes.

The project was also reportedly expected to benefit from lessons learned during the development of Halo: Campaign Evolved and the planned Halo 2 remake. Halo Studios was said to be exploring new bonus missions for both projects, following the approach taken with Halo: Campaign Evolved.

However, Rebs Gaming’s sources claim that layoffs ultimately derailed the Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes. Halo Studios has not officially confirmed the reported projects or their cancellation.
