Steam Achievement Sets Enter Beta With New Tracking Features

by Greg Martin

Valve has launched a beta for Steam Achievement Sets, a new feature that lets players organise and track achievements in separate collections. The update also introduces dedicated DLC achievement tracking, completion trophies, and changes to how players compare their progress with friends.

The feature is designed to address issues with games that continue to receive expansions, DLC, and seasonal updates. New achievements can make it harder to track progress, while additional requirements can affect players who have already completed a game’s achievement list. Achievement Sets allow developers to group related achievements into collections based on the structure of their games.

Players will still unlock achievements through normal gameplay. However, supported games will display achievements in separate sets, each with its own progress bar. Completing every achievement in a set awards a completion trophy on the player’s profile. If developers later add achievements to that set, the previous completion status will remain intact.

Steam Achievement Sets come in two types. Base Game sets contain achievements available to all players, with progress and trophies displayed in blue. DLC sets cover achievements tied to additional content, appearing in purple once players have access to the relevant DLC. These achievements will not count towards overall game progress until the required content has been acquired.

Valve is also introducing support for archived achievements and sets, which could be used for seasonal challenges or limited-time holiday events. Archived achievements will remain visible on the profiles of players who unlocked them, but they will no longer appear on the profiles of those who missed them or prevent those players from completing a set.

The beta also includes an updated achievements page with filters for individual sets and locked or unlocked achievements. Players can toggle global achievement completion statistics, compare their progress with up to three friends, and check completed sets alongside rare achievements and DLC progress. The total achievement count will account for the content each player owns and achievements that are still available to unlock.

Other changes include renaming the Perfect Games tab to Completed, expanding the Completionist Showcase to include games with completed achievement sets, and displaying games played through Family Sharing in the Games List. Steam’s Store and Library pages will also indicate when a game supports Achievement Sets.

The feature is available now through the Steam Client beta for players and developers. Valve plans to continue refining it during the testing period.
