Metro 2039 will require an internet connection to unlock its disc version and download additional files, as the game won’t fit entirely on a single disc. Developer 4A Games confirmed the requirement, explaining that players will need to connect to the internet once before playing, but won’t need to stay online afterwards.
The clarification came after a user asked the official Metro 2039 account on X whether the game would be playable from beginning to end using only the data on the disc. In response, the developer said, “METRO 2039 will require an initial download as the game does not fit fully on one disc. To make sure our community gets to experience the game at the same time, you will need an internet connection initially to unlock the game. The game does not otherwise require internet.”
This means players purchasing the physical version will need an internet connection during the initial setup. However, according to the developer, an ongoing internet connection won’t be necessary once the game has been unlocked and the additional files have been downloaded.
Metro 2039 is scheduled to launch on February 4, 2027, for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X and S. Developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver, the first-person shooter follows a new protagonist known as the Stranger, who returns from exile to the post-apocalyptic Moscow underground to confront an oppressive faction controlling the tunnels.
