Digital Foundry has analysed Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Remake on Nintendo Switch 2, examining their resolution, visual quality and performance. The findings suggest that all three are solid ports, although Resident Evil 4 Remake struggles more during demanding encounters.
According to Digital Foundry, Resident Evil 4 Remake runs at an internal resolution of approximately 540p in docked mode, using NVIDIA’s DLSS upscaling technology. Handheld mode lowers this to around 360p. Despite the low internal resolution, image clarity remains reasonable, although foliage and hair can appear blurred or unstable during movement.
The Switch 2 version also makes several graphical compromises compared with PS5, including reduced shadow effects, softer volumetric lighting, missing screen-space reflections and less dense foliage. However, texture quality is often comparable to PS5 and can be better than PS4 in certain areas.
Resident Evil 4 Remake targets 60fps but struggles to maintain it during demanding encounters. Digital Foundry recorded frame rates dropping into the mid-40s during the opening village fight, while performance frequently sits in the 40s and 50s in handheld mode. The PS4 version generally runs between 35 and 45fps in the tested sections, while PS5 can maintain a near-locked 60fps in its frame rate mode.
Digital Foundry suggested that an optional 40fps cap could provide a more consistent experience on Switch 2.
Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 Remake perform more consistently, with fewer severe frame rate drops and a generally smooth handheld experience. Both games target 60fps, although occasional dips remain. The analysis also found that the Switch 2 versions appear to omit the ray tracing options available on PS5, with limited visual impact.
Digital Foundry attributed the performance difference partly to the games’ technical demands, as Resident Evil 4 Remake places greater pressure on the hardware than its predecessors.
