Halo Studios reportedly considered developing a game based on Halo: First Strike, the novel that bridges the events of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. According to a new report from Rebs Gaming on YouTube, the proposed project would have featured at least five missions but was affected by studio layoffs before it could move forward.
Rebs Gaming claims that Halo Studios began reconsidering its approach to the franchise’s expanded universe after observing community feedback surrounding Halo: Campaign Evolved. The studio had reportedly underestimated how much players wanted to experience important stories from the novels in video games rather than having to read the books to follow the wider narrative.
According to Rebs Gaming’s sources, members of Halo Studios’ lore team had advocated for Campaign Evolved to incorporate material from Halo: The Flood, the novelisation of the original game, alongside other stories from the expanded universe. However, studio leadership reportedly believed that most fans were either uninterested in the novels or indifferent to them.
That perception allegedly changed as the studio shared more details about Campaign Evolved and engaged with the community. Players repeatedly asked whether the remake would include material from The Flood, while the absence of additional content from the novels also became a point of criticism.
With the next mainline Halo game reportedly expected to take time to enter production, Halo Studios explored ways to make use of the work already completed on Campaign Evolved. Rebs Gaming claims that downloadable content was among the options considered, as it would allow the studio to reuse existing assets while expanding the game’s story.
Several novels were reportedly discussed as potential adaptations, but First Strike eventually emerged as the leading candidate.
The novel takes place between the original game’s conclusion and the beginning of Halo 2, making it a potential bridge between Campaign Evolved and a remake of the sequel. According to Rebs Gaming, the proposed adaptation would have included at least five missions, some of which could have been two to three times longer than a typical Halo campaign mission. The finale was also expected to be particularly substantial.
The opening mission reportedly would have picked up immediately after the events of Campaign Evolved, with Master Chief rescuing Linda from her cryopod before reuniting with Johnson and the rest of the crew aboard a Pelican piloted by Polaski. The campaign would then have followed Chief’s fight against the Covenant, leading to a confrontation at the Unyielding Hierophant, a Covenant space station featured in the novel. The story would have concluded with Chief returning to Earth at the start of Halo 2.
The adaptation reportedly would not have covered every event from the book. Instead, the team wanted to keep the story focused on Master Chief and the conflict against the Covenant, while adding discoveries, collectibles and terminals to encourage exploration.
Halo Studios also allegedly considered releasing the project as a standalone spin-off rather than as downloadable content. According to Rebs Gaming, feedback from people consulted about the proposal suggested that a relatively inexpensive DLC release would make more sense if the game did not include additional modes such as multiplayer or Firefight. A larger standalone release could potentially be justified by expanding the content.
The project could also have influenced the studio’s longer-term plans. Rebs Gaming claims that Halo Studios would have considered adapting more novels into games if First Strike proved successful.
