A24’s upcoming Elden Ring movie reportedly has a production budget of nearly $200 million, making it the studio’s most expensive film to date. According to The Wall Street Journal, the live-action adaptation is scheduled for release in 2028 and represents a major investment for the independent film company.

The report cites people familiar with the matter as the source of the budget figure. At nearly $200 million, the film would substantially exceed A24’s previous record-holder, Marty Supreme, which reportedly had a budget of around $70 million.

Directed by Alex Garland, the Elden Ring adaptation brings FromSoftware’s dark fantasy universe to the big screen. George R. R. Martin, who helped develop the game’s worldbuilding and mythology, is also involved as a producer.

The film’s reported budget points to an unusually large-scale production for A24, which has built its reputation on a diverse slate of independent films. The studio has increasingly pursued more ambitious projects as major Hollywood companies look to replicate its approach to filmmaking and talent development.

The Wall Street Journal report also discusses the growing competition surrounding online horror properties and other projects attracting significant investment from established studios.

FromSoftware’s Elden Ring launched in 2022 and became a major critical and commercial success. Its expansive open world, challenging combat and layered fantasy setting helped establish it as one of the most prominent action RPGs of its generation. The game later received the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, further expanding its world.
