Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores Faces Another Wave Of Review Bombing

PlayStation and Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Forbidden West is facing yet another wave of review bombing upon the release of the Burning Shores expansion.

It’s not entirely clear what the reason behind the user review bombing on Metacritic is, though it may have to do with the portrayal of certain characters in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores. Aloy’s latest journey takes her to an island in pursuit of a remaining member of the Far Zenith organization. The expansion introduces some new NPCs, some of whom end up establishing a deeper relation with the protagonist.

Some of the negative reviews seem to have legitimate criticisms regarding the game elements found in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, while others have taken a disliking towards the direction in which Aloy’s personal story is headed. Those who have yet to play the expansion and would prefer to head in blind ought to avoid going through the user reviews, however, as several of them reveal certain plot points.

Previously, it was reported that Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores may have received a physics upgrade. The Lead Game Tech Programmer at Guerrilla Games, Jorrit Rouwe, had released a new version of Jolt Physics, an open-source physics library that he wrote and maintains. The physics engine is used in Horizon Forbidden West, and it’s likely that the recently released Burning Shores expansion has incorporated this physics upgrade.

Horizon Forbidden West is a 2022 action role-playing game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game, which is a follow-up to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn, is set in a post-apocalyptic version of the Western United States that is recovering from an extinction event brought on by a rogue robot swarm. With ranged and melee weapons, the player can fight hostile machine creatures in the open world while completing quests. Since February 21, 2023, the game has been available as part of the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog.
