id Software Addresses Impact of Xbox Layoffs

id Software has issued a statement following the recent Xbox layoffs, saying the studio remains equipped to continue developing the games and technology it is known for despite being affected by the restructuring.

In a message shared this week, the studio said: “Thank you all for the support this week. While our studio was impacted, those changes were spread across teams. We still have the crew we need to build the games and tech we’re known for. The team today is about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016).”

The developer added that its approach to game development will remain unchanged, stating, “We have always had a flat studio where everyone is a maker, and we will remain true to that philosophy moving forward.”

The statement also addressed employees affected by the cuts. “We are focused on supporting each other and the team members impacted. We’re going to keep building the great games and tech that have defined us for the past 35 years, and we’re looking forward to seeing you at QuakeCon this August.”

The comments come after Microsoft’s July 2026 restructuring of its Xbox division, which eliminated 3,200 roles across its gaming business. According to official WARN notices, id Software was among the affected studios, with 136 employees losing their jobs following the launch of DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations. The reported reductions included engine programmers and much of the studio’s visual effects team.
