A report from Apogee and 3D Realms founder Scott Miller claims that the majority of id Software’s development team has been laid off as part of Microsoft’s ongoing restructuring of Xbox.
Posting on social media, Miller said he had received insider information suggesting that “a majority of Id’s studio is being laid off, including most (if not all) coders.”
One senior member of id Software has publicly confirmed they were affected by the layoffs.
Principal Concept Artist Colin Geller announced that his role had been terminated after more than 12 years at the studio.
“After over 12.5 years, one complete game trilogy and 1 day short of the 9th DOOM related project (and 12th project at this studio) I’ve worked on, myself and many others were informed our roles at id Software were terminated as part of larger organizational changes this morning,” Geller wrote.
Geller reflected on his time at the studio, praising the team’s collaborative culture and the talent of his colleagues.
“With these changes many of my amazing colleagues are taking their institutional knowledge and skill sets into the wider industry.”
He also confirmed that he is seeking new opportunities following the layoffs.
The reported job losses come shortly after Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced plans to cut approximately 3,200 jobs during FY27 as part of what the company described as the biggest restructuring in Xbox’s history. Microsoft has not confirmed the scale of the reported layoffs at id Software or commented on Miller’s claims regarding the future of the id Tech engine.
