Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Will Feature A Revamped Combat System

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, Dragami Games’ upcoming remake of Grasshopper Manufacture’s action-adventure hack-and-slash game, will feature a revamped combat system.

Yoshimi Yasuda, Game Designer at Dragami Games, took to social media to reveal that the combat system in the upcoming Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will be improved to be more enjoyable for fans of modern action games.

The remaster/remake will feature speed adjustments in order to eliminate the sluggish feel of chainsaw battles and will also include improvements to input response timing for cheerleading and chainsaw combo attacks as well as improvements to camera movement. These refinements are likely aimed at bringing the game more in line with modern hack-and-slash games, such as Devil May Cry 5 and Bayonetta 3.

Previously, Yasuda had stated that the development team had decided to change the game’s design from remake to remaster based on the request of fans. While this is a bit of a vague statement, it likely means that Lollipop Chainsaw will more closely follow the gameplay and level design of the original. The remaster will essentially be a graphical upgrade instead of reinventing the wheel in terms of gameplay.

The original Lollipop Chainsaw is a 2012 hack and slash game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 video game consoles. It focuses on Juliet Starling, a cheerleader who hunts zombies in a fictional California high school (voiced by Tara Strong in English, Eri Kitamura in the PlayStation 3 version, and Yoko Hikasa in the Xbox version in Japanese). The game was a collaboration between director James Gunn and game designer Suda51. It was originally published and released in 2012 by Kadokawa in Japan and by Warner Bros. in all other regions.

Players take on the role of Juliet as she battles through hordes of zombies. With her chainsaw, she can perform high and low attacks, dodges, and melee attacks. Zombies can be attacked until they become groggy, at which point a chainsaw attack will instantly kill them. By eliminating zombies, destroying objects, and saving classmates, players can earn gold medals.
